He whakamārama - Explanation by VOX Dawn

Last year I met Pania (Leader of the Save Our Unique Landscape (SOUL) group) with my whānau as we visited the whenua at Ihumātao and attended the whakamoemiti service and karakia with the hapu and SOUL roopu on Te Puketapapa Hape te maunga. Earlier this year I met the roopu and Pania again in Parihaka and heard matua Ruakere Hond speak about the stories of Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi. I saw the images of Eva Rickard in the wharenui there and again heard the stories of Whaingaroa. The following day we traveled to Whanganui to hear the stories of the River Claims back in 1994 and then continued to Pōneke.

From this hearenga I wrote this waiata. This waiata is about the ahi kaa inside of us, the beauty of a people, the resilience and mana we carry... 'It being well with our Soul' truth is it’s an on going story in our nation as I learned during this haerenga and listened to our stories it's the same story for many indigenous people in Te Ao throughout the world.
