He whakamārama - Explanation by Seth Haapu

The globalization of capital is stripping bare the earth and its cultures. Out of the ashes of insecure land possession, environmental destruction, and weak social and economic development, so many of us are wondering what to do, how to engage, who to work with and how we can be present in this moment. I am only at the beginning of my journey and have been learning as much as I can about the many complex communities, and environments that have been hurt by many collective injustices that mark our historical past and the living present.

One primal truth I've come to know is that cultural survival adds to biodiversity, ecological integrity, and environmental health upon which we all depend. This has served as a rallying cry from people across the world who continue to live close to these landscapes in body, mind and spirit. I have been participating in a really beautiful expression of this call through writing. I write for so many reasons. I write to express my most native voice. I write to deepen my connection with the sacred. I’m learning how to go even deeper toward new ways of imagining, voicing, connecting, protecting, and celebrating what we have. Ūkaipō speaks to the shared experience of connection to the people, land and sea. Our home.
